Hey Geri, I was wondering if canned foods are good/bad for you and why? Also, what are some alternatives when money is low and all you can afford are canned foods...?

Hello! Not all canned foods are bad for you, but there are certain things you need to be careful about. For example, don’t eat canned tuna more than once a week because of mercury, and many canned foods (especially soup) are high in sodium. Some of my canned staples are:

  • Black, cannellini, or kidney beans- No added salt or 50% sodium
  • Pumpkin
  • Butternut squash
  • Lentil Soup
  • Vegetarian Chili
  • Wild Alaskan Salmon
  • Tuna
  • Sardines in spring water

Eating Healthy on a low budget:

  • Breakfast: Oatmeal, milk, bananas
  • Lunches: quinoa (from bulk food aisle), brown rice, lentils, dried beans, carrots, celery, spinach
  • Dinners: tilapia, broccoli, cabbage
  • Snacks: fruits in season, almonds

Those are some foods that are regularly inexpensive. Try to buy fruits and veggies at are 99c or less per lb and to visit the bulk food aisle. I really hope you don’t only eat canned vegetables all the time! They taste kinda of…blehhh.
